Although practice is one hour a week
hula consumes more than that time.
There is typically practice done at home
or with other haumana on their own time,
homework such as researching mele (song)
or practicing oli (chant), finding out history
about a place they may be dancing about,
or participating in a workshop the halau is
doing together. Hula is more than just an
extracurricular activitiy but a lifestyle that
the haumana becomes dedicated to and in
that, grows with each other into ohana (family).
Haumana are expected to attend practice weekly, participate in workshops, and performances on time. A halau is a school of learning. The student comes to learn dance, technique, history, values, skills, and more about the art, love, & tradition of hula.
